Louise Bourgeois

The Functional Eye Benches I, II and III

eye, aware, inquisitive

(Materials : Black Zimbabwe granite)

" Louise Bourgeois' functional Eye Benches I, II, III resemble giant observant eyes. The three sets of two benches, carved out of granite by Italian stonemasons, are distinguished from one another by variations in scale, form, and detailing, and by the size of the attached seats. The enlargement and displacement of the eye recall the perspectives of Surrealism, a source for these images. Visitors encounter the disembodied eyes, which seem to follow their every movement, and later discover that the enigmatic sculptural objects provide comfortable outdoor seating. "

Descending Light
lamp, scintillate, lavish

( Materials : glass crystals/stainless brass, electric lights)

" Descending Light is a perplexing object: a fallen chandelier, horizontal rather than vertical, collapsed but still in working order, majestic in its decadence, splendid and fragile, sensual and revolutionary red, revealing and mysterious, symbolic and impenetrable. "

Ear On Arm
ear, hark, scrupulopus

" The EXTRA EAR is a soft prosthesis, constructed not out of hard materials and technologies, but out of soft tissue and flexible cartilage. This would not be simply a wearable prosthesis, but one constructed on the body using its skin and cartilage as a permanent addition. The surgical techniques for ear reconstruction have been developed, so this is a plausible project. "
