Eric Owen Moss - The Box

ERIC OWEN MOSS

THE BOX
(Culver City, CA, USA, 2000)

The Box is an intervention, an addition which modifies the organization and structure of an existing warehouse on National Boulevard in Culver City. It has three conceptual parts; a cylindrical reception area located on the ground floor of the existing warehouse building, extending vertically to intersect the one-story, truss supported roof. The box rises out of an existing wooden shed which is now used for offices. The lower volume retained the original structure, providing a bright, open workspace for several people in a single company. The idea behind the project was to create an independent area for meeting without changing the layout of the original space. The solution is the metal box, accessed by internal stairway, which enjoys panoramic views of the city and valley.
